R: In the moment, you are focused and completely fixated on your mission. Every part of you is thinking about how to carry out your tasks in the most professional manner.

Stav Levaton: Upon his release, Or reportedly asked to spend time alone with his girlfriend, and former hostage, Noa Argamani, as the two shared what they described as their "first cigarette together after two years." 🚬

LIU XIN: The newly established districts will help detail the current administrative work in the area
LIU XIN: the establishment of the Xisha and Nansha districts will improve the management of its juridical area
RAYMOND J. DE SOUZA: In four months Pope Francis will have to decide whether he wants to extend the “Provisional Agreement” Signed on Sept. 22, 2018 between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China, seek to amend it or scrap it.
One of the most curious aspects of the provisional agreement is that, aside from officials in the Vatican Secretariat of State who negotiated it, it is hard to find senior Catholic voices willing to defend it. Even the most senior prelates from Asia — Cardinals Oswald Gracias of Bombay and Antonio Tagle from the Philippines — have offered tepid support.

ROBBIE GRAMER, JACK DETSCH, DAN HAVERTY: all American officials should operate with the “baseline assumption” that all their communications with African governments are monitored by the Chinese.

MICHELLE MAGLALANG~MALKIN: Dangerous menaces are spreading from mainland China to the United States.

Paul Shan Kuo~hsi: All the Synod Fathers agreed that there must be a new way of presenting Jesus Christ to the peoples of Asia.
proposition 7: Encouragement is to be given by this Synod to theologians to pursue their work of developing an inculturated theology that responds to Asian realities. This theologising is to be carried out with courage, in faithfulness to the Scriptures and to the Church’s tradition, and in sincere adherence to the Magisterium and with an awareness of pastoral realities.
Jacques Dupuis: Much has been heard during the Synod for Asian Bishops recently held in Rome about the pressing need for the Asian Churches to present themselves "with an Asian face".

JONNY TICKLE: Russia and China have signed a memorandum agreeing to create an international lunar research station, as Moscow and Beijing look to amalgamate their expertise to further advance space exploration. While Russia has a long history of space exploration, China has only recently begun to make exploring the cosmos one of its priorities.

JEANNE MUCHNICK: The "Jewish tradition" of Chinese food and a movie on Christmas Day is looking more like Netflix and takeout. And while there are some great shows that give you the theater experience (we're partial to "Wonder Woman 1984"), there are just as many Chinese food options meaning you can still enjoy your chicken with broccoli ritual paired with the latest blockbuster.

Isabel Gomez: A classic Filipino noodle dish is pancit bihon that uses Chinese rice noodles. The long noodles represent long life.

Tom Fowdy: An investor is rarely an ideologue. Sure, they abhor political risk, but they don’t discriminate solely upon values

MICAH HALPERN: For better and for worse, non-Jewish culture encroaches upon us.

JOHN L. ALLEN JUNIOR: Among other things, the vast majority of Americans who’ll cast ballots probably don’t know what the Vatican’s line on China is and couldn’t care less.

MARC SAPERSTEIN: At Harvard Divinity School, I once heard a Chinese professor of religion comment that those who translate the Bible into Chinese have to make a fundamental decision about whether to render the familiar verses by the Chinese equivalents of "Man does not live by bread alone" and "Give us this day our daily bread" (Matthew 6:11), or to render them as "Man does not live by rice alone" and "Give us this day our daily rice." To use the Chinese word for "bread" – which is nonexistent in the Chinese diet – would immediately suggest that the biblical text comes from an alien culture, something that the Chinese may well think of as applying to others, but not directly to them. Substituting the word for "rice" conveys the meaning in a manner that feels much more inclusive, yet it loses the historical setting of the passage.

ED CONDON/CNA: Next month, the 2018 Vatican-China deal expires. Those close to the negotiations, both in Rome and in Beijing, now confidently predict a one-year extension to the two-year deal to be agreed.

EVELYN CHENG: From a social perspective, Su expects China to find more ways to boost consumption, including abolishing limits on the number of children families can have.

EVELYN CHENG: The central committee of China’s ruling Communist Party, led by Xi, is set to meet in Beijing from Oct. 26 to 29 to discuss a proposal for national development for the next five years — from 2021 to 2025. Economists predict the country will firmly become the world’s largest economy in the next few years.

JAMES GRIFFITHS: As many countries struggle to plan weeks ahead, China just set its agenda for the next 15 years

LAURIE CHEN: A secretive 2018 agreement between Beijing and the Vatican was renewed

ELISE ANN ALLEN: Vatican agreement with China likely to be renewed

ANDREW BROWN: the real fight is not over whether China will become a country with a significant Christian presence, but who will control the burgeoning churches. The Vatican knows this well. I have been told by insiders that the strategic thrust of Pope Francis’s diplomacy is all directed eastwards, towards the emergence of China as a great religious power.

George Browne: But there is a new fraternity of late sprung up who call themselves Jesuits, which will deceive many, who are much after the Scribes and Pharisees’ manner. Among the Jews they shall strive to abolish the truth, and shall come very near to do it. For these sorts will turn themselves into several forms; with the Heathen a Heathenist, with the Atheists an Atheist, with the Jews a Jew, with the Reformers a Reformade, purposely to know your intentions, your minds, your hearts, and your inclinations, and thereby bring you at last to be like the fool that "said in his heart there was no God." These shall spread over the whole world, "shall be admitted into the counsels of Princes, and they never the wiser," charming of them, yea, making your Princes reveal their hearts, and the secrets therein, and yet they not perceive it;
PHILIP JENKINS: it pays to avoid the familiar North American labels of liberal and conservative. The Catholic Church always operates on its own particular alignments, which may or may not conform with those of the secular world.

KATHY GILSINAN: So even if China doesn’t give more, it advertises better.

Judah was not tending the flocks with his brothers, the African sons of Bilhah and the European sons of Zilpah, his father's wives, and he did not bring their Father a bad report about them necessarily.

CNA STAFF: In China, religious education of any person under the age of 18 is illegal.

Tom Fowdy: A market of 1.4 billion, which has not even reached its height in terms of consumption potential, will always hold more clout than a market of 320 million people.
