Of course, it never entered their heads that here again their own wish was the sole father of all their thoughts. No more did the inconsistency of their own hopes. For by expecting the end of the British Empire to follow from a collapse of British rule in India, who as individuals always impressed me as pompous big-mouths without any realistic background, they themselves admitted that India was of the most paramount importance to England.
